Evolution at the door - The handle goes digital

What started out over 130 years ago with furniture fittings has developed world- wide into a synonym for aesthetically and functionally outstanding door and window fittings: FSB. As a mentor to FSB, the generalist designer Otl Aicher started tackling tools to extend the hand in its entire diversity some 35 years ago. What do people and their hands expect when they grip? How do the object and user communicate with each other? How are ergonomics and aesthetics reconciled? The findings led to a number of books on the topic of gripping and handles, and are applied in practice at FSB to this day. If the handle appears to be just an inconspicuous utensil at first glance, then its remarkable complexity becomes evident on closer inspection. FSB uses a variety of materials and surfaces, (handle) shapes, versions specific to particular applications and complementary accessories to address all architectural requirements. This variety serves only one purpose in its entirety: to put a tool in people’s hands that opens up entrances and exits and reliably provides service at the interface between architecture and mankind. (Door) handles populate our every day in many varieties and they regularly become a nuisance when they do not live up to their task for ergonomic or functional reasons. Consequently, they earn no less attention than a comfortable chair, a wobble-free table or a useful and attractively shaped desk lamp. This appears even more significant today if you take a look at the fundamental changes to how buildings are used. Particularly in commercial and public buildings such as office blocks, hotels or schools, the requirements of a fitting in the meantime go well beyond the standard mechanical operation of the door. In reality, solutions are called for that organize the building as a whole in a flexible and convenient manner. FSB has combined the aesthetic quality of its classic analogue fittings with digital in- sides that are no less well thought out. The result is a system family for electronic access management. The isis® brand features adequate solutions of varying complexity for interior and exterior doors. isis® M100 and a card-based programming system directly on the hardware provide a cost-attractive entry- level solution for smaller properties. In medium to large-sized building structures, isis® M300 reveals the benefits of its fully LAN/ WLAN-based administration. A selection of classic tubular handle designs have in turn been equipped with a biometric finger scanner (isis® F). For FSB, this is nothing more – and nothing less – than the evolution of the door handle, as already grasped by Ludwig Wittgenstein and Otl Aicher.
