Loft Milano

by Giuseppe Tortato Architects

A pure expression of spatial dynamism a sophisticated combination of materials, simple geometric shapes and a particular attention to details make this loft, designed by Giuseppe Tortato in the heart of Milan, a unique space, with an elegant and strong character. The double-height spaces are characterized by monolithic volumes in a continuous interplay of solids and voids, of fixed and sliding walls and transparencies. The dynamic recessed elements change continuously, turning into something else, such as a picture on a wall that reveals the plasma tv or the library that hides the technical room behind a "secret passage". The living area stretches around a large "open space" that intentionally hides the sophisticated technolgy of its mechanisms, allowing a gradual discovery to the visitor. The eucalyptus’ essence library is the true "leitmotiv" of the interior, that generates "open dialogue" with the exterior doors creating  a intimate and warm ambient. The natural wood is enhanced by the dark walls and the black stone and grey wood floors; a few carefully selected colors that add warmth and elegance. The main entrance is on the second level overlooking the open space below: the centrality of the environment is underlined by the large Catellani & Smith chandelier created by the designer. On the right a "suspended" staircase leads to large lounge room and to the sleeping area. On the left a monolithic volume facing all the double-height contains different spaces as the guest bathroom, a true treasure in red travertine, the wine cellar, designed like a smoked glass box, and the kitchen, featured with a porphyry purple central island. The kitchen colors also characterize the table in the dining area, which concludes the path of the living room and overlooks the glass loft above. The sleeping area, located on the lower floor, is designed in a similar way to the rest of the house: the volumes are crisp and enhanced by materials, that combine or oppose to one another. In the main area the eucalyptus wood box of the walk in wardrobe is balanced by smoked glass prisms of the bathrooms; pure shapes, one opaque and the other transparent, that create harmonious contrasts. The furniture design is simple and enriched by details like shell handles or floor and ceiling shutters. The materials of the bathrooms are intentionally precious and "exaggerated", as opposed to the minimum space of the room. The lights are conceived to accompany the interior decoration by the use of grooves in the ceiling, for example to illuminate the staircase or define the corner volume of the wardrobe. Hidden spotlights that become real light sculptures, as for the living room chandelier, or the lights on the dining table. The house’s atmosphere is spectacular but enveloping, elegant with character, characterized by strong and personal choices that deeply reflect its inhabitants but are carefully calibrated in a continuous game that doesn’t overpower.
